fotodocumentation of making camouflage nets by Johana Merta

WE HOPE, BUT WE KNOW NOTHING.
WE HOPE, THAT WHAT WE DO MAKE A SENCE.

Živý nás nedostanou. Až půjdeš, můj popel vezmi sebou.

The term „fake horizon“ is used in military terminology. Camouflage nets are also woven in the colors of the sky to hide something directly in the open countryside on high ground. I acquired this knowledge and skill in weaving nets from the organization BRNO PRO UKRAJINU. I contacted them to offer them leftover material from the Czech parachute manufacturer Mars Jevíčko. They were not interested in it because they use special nanofibers containing tracking devices for weaving nets. „WE HAVE HOPE…“ is my latest work in relation to the occupation of Ukraine. The work was created for specific formats at the House of Arts in Brno, which hosted my project OVER ALL POSSIBILITIES 2 in August 2025. The project was created in 2024 for the DZYGA Gallery in Lviv to support Czechia-Ukraine relations.

Secondary questions accompanying this work are: recognizing false patterns, methods of manipulation and hiding the truth, the power of faith as a combat advantage, the necessity of creation in crisis situations, and the worship of struggle as a way of coping with trauma.
